Tips for an ergonomic workstation

Here are some tips to make your work station more comfortable

  • Top of monitor at or below eye level
    • Adjust the monitor so that it is approximately one arms length from your face and that your eyes are level with the top of the screen. Position (tilt) the screen to minimize glare and harsh reflections.
  • Monitor and keyboard centered in front of you so as to prevent twisting of the head or neck.
  • No glare on screen.
    • Adjust the screen so that any glare from windows, lights, etc, does not cause an awkward posture or position while performing work tasks.
  • Documents in line with keyboard and monitor.
    • Should you require a document holder, ensure that it is positioned at the same viewing distance as the screen.
  • Negative tilt keyboard support.
    • Place keyboard on a platform below desk level. Angle the keyboard slightly away from you in a "negative tilt." This will allow your wrists to remain straight.
  • Wrists flat and straight.
    • Your hands and wrists should be level with your elbows and the "A" "S" "D" "F" keys on the keyboard.
  • Arms and elbows close to body and not extended outward.
    • Shoulders and upper arms should be about perpendicular to the floor and in a relaxed position.
  • Change postures often.
  • Work in a reclined position.
    • The more work you perform while in a slightly reclined position, the more of your body weight will be distributed to the backrest of your chair instead of your spine.
  • Take frequent short breaks.
    • This will help ensure your comfort, safety, and work productivity.
  • Feet flat on floor or footrest.
    • If you use a footrest, it should be stable, movable, angled so that it can support both feet, and have a non-skid surface.
  • CPU off desk.
    • Keep your CPU off of your desk to allow more space for proper positioning of other work equipment, documents, and supplies.
